Would Believing in Himself Make Junior Successful Why would Junior believe in succeeding if he can’t learn to believe believe in himself? He believed in himself when he stood up to Roger and believed in himself during basketball tryouts. The incident with Roger happened a couple days after he entered the school, because Roger is a Bully. The basketball tryouts event happened because he is Indian, and there are much better people on the team, this occurred in the gym. Junior has to believe because you need to be encouraged or inspired to do great things. Although Junior was put through tough situations, he managed to push through them by being confident.
Junior taught himself to believe by standing up for others and himself. Junior says “I was defending indians, black people, and buffalo”. This means that he isn’t defending just himself, but also others who have the same struggles. It shows that he is willing to stand up and not be afraid. Then he said “But they just stared at me, they were shocked”. This means that the people following Roger knew that Junior took action and that he wasn’t afraid. He benefited from his action of believing that he is more than a red skin and standing up to the Alpha.
If he hadn’t believed in himself, he wouldn’t have made it in the basketball team. Him and the coach had a conversation that changed his reputation with the coach, “do you want to take a break”, “No, I’ll take him on again”. This means that he doesn’t want to give up, and that also shows that he as an indian can do everything a white person. “I remember you, You're a great shooter”.”Yeah”. He was reminded about his past, which then realized he believed in himself then which encouraged him to believe now.
Because of Junior punching Roger, he fears Junior even though Junior is more terrified of him. “We are going to finish this fight”. “Are you crazy”? this says that Junior is ready to fight a fight that Roger, but Roger is scared of Junior because he took action. “Roger stood up then walked away, then his crew stared at me like I was a serial killer then followed him”. Junior believed in himself in standing up for himself and that resulted in him no longer having bullies.
In conclusion, Junior takes a big risk in competing against someone twice as big, and twice as good in basketball which resulted in Junior showing effort, bravery, and resulted in making the team. Junior stood up to his bully who never messed with him again because of his bravery, knowing that he will fight and not give up.
